街角で風船売りの爺さんが風船を売っていました。赤や青や黄色や紫や、色々な風船玉は頬を擦り寄せながら風の吹くほうへ靡いていました。一匹の白い蝶々が風船玉の所へ毎日飛んで来て、一日中遊んで行くのでした。蝶々はたくさんの風船のうち、一番小さい赤い風船玉と、大変仲良しでした。ある日、赤ん坊を背負った子守がやって来て、一銭でその小さい赤い風船玉を買いました。買われて行く時、赤い風船玉は言いました。「蝶々さん、さようなら」けれど、白い蝶々は言いました。「いいえ、私は付いて行きます」そして、蝶々はヒラヒラと赤い風船玉に付いて行きました。子守は並木道を通って、公園のほうへ行きました。糸で繋がれた風船玉は子守の後から付いて行きました。そして、その後から白い蝶々は付いて行きました。子守は公園へ来ると、ベンチに腰掛けて子守歌を歌いました。「ねんねん　よをををねんねん　よう」
