What changed in this version: the Service is now operated by Redmoon Systems OÜ (Estonia) instead of a French sole proprietorship, and the governing law and contact address follow from that. Your rights, the pricing and the way the Service works are unchanged.
This Cookie Policy explains how Yomimaru uses cookies and similar technologies when you use our website and application (collectively, the "Service"). The Service is operated by Redmoon Systems OÜ, a private limited company (osaühing) registered in Estonia under registry code 17506382, with its registered address at Ruunaoja tn 3, Lasnamäe linnaosa, Tallinn, Harju maakond 11415, Estonia ("Redmoon", "Company", "we", "us", or "our"). Yomimaru is a product of Redmoon Systems OÜ; the company's website is redmoon.red.
By continuing to use our Service, you agree to our use of the technologies described below.
1. What Are Cookies and Local Storage?
Cookies are small text files stored on your browser or device by websites, apps, online media, and advertisements. While traditional cookies are sent with HTTP requests, modern web applications like Yomimaru often rely on Local Storage (a web storage API provided by your browser) to store data locally on your device.
2. How We Use Local Storage
Yomimaru relies on localStorage rather than traditional HTTP cookies for almost everything it stores. What we keep there falls into two groups.
Essential and functional. These are needed to deliver the service you asked for. Under the EU ePrivacy Directive (ePD) they are classified as "Strictly Necessary" or "Functional", and they do not require a prior consent banner.
onboardingPhaseandyomimaru_onboarding_temp: Track your progress and your Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) assessment scores through the multi-step signup, so nothing is lost before your account exists.yomimaru_tour_resumeandhasSeenReadingTutorial: Remember which guided tours and tutorials you have already been through, so they resume correctly and do not repeat.lastReadTextId: Caches the last text you opened, which is what makes the "Resume reading" shortcut work on your dashboard.yomimaru_banner_dismiss_v1_…: Remember the nudges and notices you have dismissed, so they stay dismissed.- Appearance and lesson-progress flags: A small set of per-user keys that hold your theme choice, your chosen learning track, and where you have reached in the kana and guided-path lessons.
Analytics. These measure how the Service is used and where our readers arrive from. Section 3 explains what we do with them.
yomimaru_device_id: A randomly generated identifier that lets us count one reader as one reader rather than one per visit, and connect the pages you read before signing up with the account you create afterwards. It has no expiry date. We replace it with a new one when you sign out.yomimaru_first_touch: Records the site or campaign that first sent you to us, and the page you landed on. Kept for 90 days.yomimaru_content_attribution: Records which article or library page you came from when you begin signing up. Kept for 24 hours.
We also keep a per-tab session identifier in sessionStorage, which your browser discards when you close the tab. None of these are used for advertising, and none of them follow you to other websites.
3. Analytics and Product Insights
We use PostHog, an open-source product analytics platform, to understand how you use Yomimaru so we can improve the learning experience. PostHog helps us track feature usage, conversion funnels, and technical performance.
To protect your privacy while maintaining high-quality analytics:
- European hosting: Our analytics data is stored in PostHog's European Union region, and analytics traffic reaches it through a first-party endpoint on yomimaru.app that forwards to PostHog's EU servers.
- What is stored on your device: We write one identifier,
yomimaru_device_id, the first time you open any Yomimaru page. That includes our public articles and library, before you have an account. The PostHog library itself holds its own state in memory while you are signed out; once you sign in, it also stores a cookie. - Pseudonymization: We do not send your email address or real name to PostHog. Once you have an account, we identify you by a cryptographically hashed version of your internal ID. This makes your analytics data pseudonymous and hard to trace back to you without access to our secure internal databases.
- Session Recordings: We may use session recordings to debug UI issues. We mask the text you type into form fields before the recording leaves your browser, and you enter payment details inside Stripe's own frame, so we never record them.
- No advertising: We do not use any of this for advertising, and we do not track you across other websites.
4. Managing Your Preferences
Most web browsers allow you to control cookies and local storage through their settings preferences. You can configure your browser to reject all cookies or local storage data, or to alert you when data is being stored. Clearing the site data for yomimaru.app removes everything described here, analytics included, and you will be counted as a new anonymous reader the next time you visit.
Please note that if you choose to block or clear the Local Storage used by Yomimaru, some core functionalities of the Service, such as onboarding, tutorials, and reading shortcuts, may not function properly.
5. Updates to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time in order to reflect changes to the cookies or tracking technologies we use or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. Please revisit this Cookie Policy regularly to stay informed about our use of tracking technologies.
