ある晴れわたった日のことでした。神さまは天国のお庭を散歩なさろうとお思いになって、使徒や聖者たちをみんなおつれになりました。そのため、天国には聖ペテロさまがひとりしかのこっていませんでした。神さまは、ごじぶんのるすのあいだは、だれもいれてはいけない、と、聖ペテロさまにおいいつけになりました。それで、聖ペテロさまは門のところに立って、番をしておりました。すると、まもなく、だれかが門をトントンとたたきました。ペテロさまは、「だれかね。なんの用事だね。」と、たずねました。「わたくしは、まずしい正直な仕立屋でございます。どうかおいれくださいませ。」という、やさしい声がしました。「なるほど、正直か。」と、ペテロさまはいいました。「首つり台にのぼったどろぼうのようにな。おまえは指を長くして、ひとの布地をはさみとったではないか。おまえは、天国にはいれはしない。
