ヒマラヤの山奥に、人間に似た怪獣が住んでいるという伝説は、ずっと昔からあった。ヒマラヤの住人たちは、この怪人をヤティ（縁起の悪い雪男）と呼んでいるそうである。この怪人のことが、急に問題になり出したのは、今から四年前に、英国のエヴェレスト登山隊長シプトン氏が、その足跡の写真を発表したのが、きっかけである。エヴェレストに近いメンルンツェ氷河の上で、雪の上に、長さ一フィートばかりの、人間の足跡によく似た足跡が残されていた。少なくとも二頭以上が打ち連れて通ったと思われるものであった。この写真は早速動物学者たちの間で問題になった。そしてその鑑定では、多分ラングール猿の足跡だろう、ということに落ちついた。しかし当のシプトン氏は、この鑑定に不服で、反対意見を発表した。
