それはたいそう大おおきな蝙蝠傘こうもりがさでした。幹子みきこは、この頃ころ田舎いなかの方ほうから新あたらしくこちらの学校がっこうへ入はいってきた新入生しんにゅうせいでした。髪かみの形かたちも着物きものも、東京とうきょうの少女しょうじょに較くらべると、かなり田舎いなか染しみて見みえました。けれど、幹子みきこはそんな事ことを少すこしも気きにかけないで、学科がっかの勉強べんきょうとか運動うんどうとか、つまり、少女しょうじょのすべきことだけをやってのけると言いった質しつの少女しょうじょでした。たとえば青あおい空そらに葉はをさしのべ、太陽たいようの方ほうへ向むいてぐんぐん育そだってゆく若木わかぎのようにのんびりした少女しょうじょでした。それにしても、幹子みきこが毎日まいにち学校がっこうへ持もってくる蝙蝠傘こうもりがさは非常ひじょうに大おおきなもので、忽ちたちまち学校がっこう中ちゅうの評判ひょうばんになりました。どこの級きゅうにも、頓智とんちがあってたいへん口くちが軽かるく、気きの利きいたことを言いっては皆みなを笑わらわせることの好すきな愚ぐな生徒せいとが一いち人にんや二に人にんはあるものです。幹子みきこの級きゅうにも、時子ときこと朝子あさこという口くちのわるい生徒せいとがありました。ある日ひ、幹子みきこは学校がっこうへゆく途中とちゅうで、この口くちのわるい連中れんちゅうに出会であいました。
