子こどものすきな小ちいさい神かみさまがありました。いつもは森もりの中なかで、歌うたをうたったり笛ふえをふいたりして、小鳥ことりやけものと遊あそんでいましたが、ときどき人ひとのすんでいる村むらへ出でてきて、すきな子こどもたちと遊あそぶのでした。けれどこの神かみさまは、いちどもすがたをみせたことがないので、子こどもたちにはちっともわかりませんでした。雪ゆきがどっさりふったつぎの朝あさ、子こどもたちはまっしろな野のっぱらで遊あそんでいました。するとひとりの子こどもが、「雪ゆきの上うえに顔かおをうつそうよ。」といいました。そこで十じゅう三さん人にんの子こどもたちは、腰こしをかがめてまるい顔かおをまっしろな雪ゆきにおしあてました。そうすると、子こどもたちのまるい顔かおは、一いち列れつにならんで雪ゆきの上うえにうつったのでした。「一いち、二に、三さん、四よん、……」とひとりの子こどもが顔かおのあとをかぞえてみました。どうしたことでしょう。十じゅう四よんありました。子こどもは十じゅう三さん人にんしかいないのに、顔かおのあとが十じゅう四よんあるわけがありません。
