山やまから里さとの方ほうへ遊あそびにいった猿さるが一いち本ほんの赤あかい蝋燭ろうそくを拾ひろいました。赤あかい蝋燭ろうそくは沢山たくさんあるものではありません。それで猿さるは赤あかい蝋燭ろうそくを花火はなびだと思おもい込こんでしまいました。猿さるは拾ひろった赤あかい蝋燭ろうそくを大事だいじに山やまへ持もって帰かえりました。山やまでは大だいへんな騒になりました。何なにしろ花火はなびなどというものは、鹿しかにしても猪いのししにしても兎うさぎにしても、亀かめにしても、鼬いたちにしても、狸たぬきにしても、狐きつねにしても、まだ一いち度ども見みたことがありません。その花火はなびを猿さるが拾ひろって来きたというのであります。「ほう、すばらしい」「これは、すてきなものだ」鹿しかや猪いのししや兎うさぎや亀かめや鼬いたちや狸たぬきや狐きつねが押合おしあいへしあいして赤あかい蝋燭ろうそくを覗のぞきました。すると猿さるが、「危い危い。そんなに近ちかよってはいけない。爆発ばくはつするから」といいました。みんなは驚おどろいて後こう込こみしました。そこで猿さるは花火はなびというものが、どんなに大おおきな音おとをして飛出とびだすか、そしてどんなに美うつくしく空そらにひろがるか、みんなに話はなして聞きかせました。
