武蔵むさしの国くにのある村むらに茂作しげさく、巳之吉みのきちと言いう二に人にんの木きこりがいた。この話はなしのあった時分じぶんには、茂作しげさくは老人ろうじんであった。そして、彼かれの年季奉公ねんきぼうこう人じんであった巳之吉みのきちは、十じゅう八はちの少年しょうねんであった。毎日まいにち、彼等かれらは村むらから約やく二に里り離はなれた森もりへ一緒いっしょに出でかけた。その森もりへ行いく道みちに、越こさねばならない大おおきな河かわがある。そして、渡わたし船ぶねがある。渡わたしのある所ところにたびたび、橋はしが架かけられたが、その橋はしは洪水こうずいのあるたびごとに流ながされた。河かわの溢あふれる時ときには、普通ふつうの橋はしでは、その急流きゅうりゅうを防ふせぐ事ことはできない。茂作しげさくと巳之吉みのきちはある大層たいそう寒さむい晩ばん、帰かえり途とで大だい吹雪ふぶきに遇あった。渡わたし場ばに着ついた、渡わたし守もりは船ふねを河かわの向むこう側がわに残のこしたままで、帰かえった事ことが分わかった。泳およがれるような日ひではなかった。それで木きこりは渡わたし守もりの小屋こやに避難ひなんした――避難ひなん所しょの見みつかった事ことを僥倖ぎょうこうに思おもいながら。小屋こやには火鉢ひばちはなかった。火ひをたくべき場所ばしょもなかった。窓まどのない一方いっぽう口くちの、二に畳じょう敷しきの小屋こやであった。

Two woodcutters, Mosaku and Minokichi, are caught in a blizzard. They shelter in a ferryman's hut, where a snow woman appears, kills Mosaku with her breath, and threatens Minokichi to remain silent. He survives and eventually meets and marries a woman named O-Yuki. After many years and children, Minokichi recounts the story to his wife, revealing she is the snow woman. She transforms and disappears, leaving him.
