一私が寄宿生となって松川私塾に入ったのは、英語を学ぶためではなく、数学を修めるためではなく、なお漢籍を学ぶことでもなく、他に密かに期待することがあったのである。加州金沢市古寺町に両隣のない一軒の大きな屋敷は、松山某が、英、漢、数学の塾舎となっていた。昔は旗野と言っていた千石取りの館で、邸内に三つの不思議があり、血天井、不開室、庭の竹藪がそれである。事の理由を尋ねるに、旗野の前の住人に、何某とか言う武士がいたが、過ちがあって改易となり、邸を追われて国境から放たれた。その妻は当時家中に評判の美人であったが、女心に思い詰めて一途に家を明け渡すのが口惜しく、私は永世ここに留まって、外へは出まいと、その居間に閉じこもり、内から錠を下ろした後は、どうしたのか、影も形も見えなくなった。その後旗野はこの家に住んだ。
