Read a sample in Japanese昔、江戸霊岸島に喜兵衞と言う金持ちの瀬戸物店があった。喜兵衞は六兵衞と言う番頭を長く使っていた。六兵衞の力で店は繁昌した、――余り盛大になって来たので、番頭独りでは管理して行かれなくなった。そこで、経験のある手代を雇う事を願って許された、それから自分の甥を一人よびよせた――以前大阪で瀬戸物商売を習った事のある、二十二ばかりの若者であった。この甥は甚だ役に立つ助け役であった、――商売にかけては経験のある叔父よりも怜悧であった。彼の才発はその家の商売を益々盛んにしたので、喜兵衞は大変喜んだ。しかし雇われてから七月程して、この若者はひどく病気になって、助かりそうには思われなくなった。江戸中の名医も幾人か呼んで診て貰ったが、誰にもその病気の性質は分からない。誰も薬の処方をするものはない、何か人知れぬ悲しみからこの病気が起こっているとしか思われないと言うのが、一同の意見であった。
