ある朝あさ、王様おうさまは、石いしの壁かべに一いち匹ひきのかたつむりを見みつけました。かたつむりが角つのを振ふってるのを見みていると、王様おうさまは、子供こどもの自分じぶん、何なんだか、かたつむりの歌うたをよく歌うたったことを思おもい出だしました。「でんでん虫むし々、角つの出だせや、だったかなあ」と、いろいろ考かんがえたが、ちっともその歌うたは思おもい出だせませんでした。「お前まえたち、でんでん虫むしの歌うた、知しらないか」と、お側そばの者ものに聞きいても、「知しりません」と言いって首くびを傾かたげています。王様おうさまは、「でんでんむしむし」と口くちの中なかで言いいながら、庭にわをぐるりと回まわって来きました。それでも、思おもい出だせないので、とうとう怒おこって、かたつむりを潰つぶしてしまおうとした時とき、ふっと王様おうさまの心こころに、「でんでんむしむし角つの、出だせ、夜明よあけに、泥棒どろぼうがやって来くる」と言いう歌うたが、浮うかびました。それと一緒いっしょに、その歌うたを、よく歌うたって下くださった、優やさしいお母かあさんの事ことも思おもい出だしました。そこで王様おうさまは、かたつむりを潰つぶさないで、青あおい葉はの上うえにそっと載のせてやりました。
