明治めいじ三さん十じゅう年ねん比ひのことであったらしい。東京とうきょうの本郷三丁目ほんごうさんちょうめあたりに長ながく空あいている家いえがあったのを、美術びじゅつ学校がっこうの生徒せいとが三さん人にんで借かりて、二に階かいを画室がしつにし下かを寝室しんしつにしていた。夏なつの夜よるのことであった。その晩ばんはそのあたりに縁日えんにちがあるので、夕飯ゆうはんがすむと二に人にんの者ものは散歩さんぽに行いこうと言いいだしたが、一いち人にんは従したがわなかった。「杖つえ頭あたまもないのに厭いやなこった」「まあ、そんなことを言いわずに行いこうじゃないか、今晩こんばんはきっと美人びじんがいるぜ」「杖つえ頭あたまがないのに、美人びじんを見みたら、なおいけない、厭いやだ、厭いやだ」「人ひとのすすめる時ときには行いくものだよ」「厭いやだ、厭いやだ、人ひとの汗あせなんか嗅かいで歩あるくのは、御苦労ごくろうなこった」こんな会話かいわがあってから、二に人にんの生徒せいとが出でかけて行いったので、家いえに残のこった生徒せいとは横よこになって雑誌ざっしの拾ひろい読よみをしていたが、眠ねむくなったので蚊帳かやの中なかへ入はいって寝ねた。そして、とろとろとしていると、何なにか物ものの気配けはいがするので眼めを開あけて枕元まくらもとを見みた。枕元まくらもとになった蚊帳かやの外そとには一いち人にんの女おんなが座すわっていた。
