Read a sample in Japaneseマカーガー峡谷は、インディアン山から、まっすぐに九マイル西北の地点にある。峡谷とはいうものの、じつはあまり高くもない、木のはえた二つの尾根にはさまれたくぼみにすぎず、上流の口から下流の口まで――峡谷も河とおなじように、それ自身の構造をもっていて、かみてとしもてがある――長さ二マイル以上ではなく、幅も十二ヤード以上のところは、一ヵ所しかない。というのは、冬は流れるが、春さきになると乾く渓流がまんなかにあって、その両岸にほとんど平地がないからである。そして、山の急斜面には、ほとんど歩くこともできぬほど、マンサニータや、ケミサルがしげっていて、それが渓流の岸までつづいている。だから、まれにマカーガー峡谷に足を踏みいれるのは、ちかくの大胆な猟師ぐらいのもの、五マイルも離れると、峡谷の名を知った者すらない。
