震災しんさいの前まえであった。白しろ画が堂どうの三さん階かいで怪談かいだん会かいをやったことがあった。出席しゅっせき者しゃは泉いずみ鏡花きょうか、喜多村きたむら緑郎ろくろう、鈴木すずき鼓村こそん、市川いちかわ猿之助えんのすけ、松崎まつざき天民てんみんなどで、蓮はちすの葉はに白しろい強飯こわめしを乗のせて出だし、灯明とうみょうは電灯でんとうを消けして盆ぼん燈籠とうろうを点つけ、一方いっぽうに高座こうざを設もうけて、譚たんをする者ものは皆みなその高座こうざにあがった。数すう人にんの怪異かいい譚たんがすむと、背広せびろ服ふくを着きた肥ふとった男おとこがあがった。それは万まん朝あさ報ほうの記者きしゃであった。「この話はなしは、私わたしの家いえの秘密ひみつで、公開こうかいを禁きんぜられておりますが、もう時代じだいもすぎましたから、話はなしてもいいと思おもいますから話はなしますが、これは田中たなか河内かわうち守まもるを殺ころした話はなしでありますが、それを殺ころした者ものは、私わたしの祖父そふ……」と云いいかけて詞ことばがもつれだした。一座いちざの者ものはおやと思おもって記者きしゃの顔かおへ眼めをやる間まもなく、その記者きしゃは前まえのめりになって高座こうざの下したへ落おちたので、怪談かいだん会かいはしらけてしまって、未明みめいまでやるはずのものが、一いち人にん帰がえり二に人にん帰がえりして、十じゅう二に時じ頃ごろには何なん人にんもいなくなった。
