Read a sample in Japanese私が北豊島郡染井の家に移ったのが、明治三十五年の春であった。何しろ滅法安い家で、立派な門構えに庭も広く、座敷も七間あって、それで家賃がわずかに月三円五十銭というのだから、当時まだ独身者だった自分には願ったり叶ったりだと喜んで、早速その家に転居することに決めたのであった。ちょっとその家の様子を話してみると、まず通路から五、六段の石段を上ると、昔の冠木門風な表門がある。そこから右手の方の玄関まで行く間が、花崗岩の敷石伝いになっていた。その間、つまり表から見ると門の右側の方に、武者窓のような窓のついた長屋が三軒あって、それもすべてこの家に付いているのだ。この長屋というのは、いずれもこれも、もう長年人が住んでいなかったものか、床も壁もボロボロに崩れて、戸を開けて内へ入ると、一種の嫌な臭気がプーンと鼻をつく。それゆえ、以前に住んでいた人なども物置にでも使っていたらしい形跡がある。
