夏目なつめ漱石そうせきは家人かじんのすすめで、やむなく電話でんわを買かったが、うるさいからといってしばらく受話器じゅわきをはずさせておいたという。自分じぶんの方ほうからはかけるが、人ひとからの呼出よびだしには応おうじないわけである。これは漱石そうせきの神経症しんけいしょう状じょうのみられたころの奇行きこうとして、重大じゅうだいな意味いみをもたせてよいものか、反対はんたいにユーモラスな悪戯あくぎとして笑わらってすませるべきだろうか。それとも単たんなるゴシップで、事実無根じじつむこんであったろうか。電話でんわに関かんする綺あやぎぬ譚たん、怪談かいだん、悲劇ひげきも、かぞえあげたら一いち冊さつの本ほんになるくらい多おおいだろう。私わたしにも、ひとつ思おもい出でがある。子供こどもの頃ころうちで電話でんわを買かったが、前まえの持主もちぬしは事業じぎょうに失敗しっぱいした商人しょうにんだった。彼かれはいよいよ明日あしたは電話でんわをはずされるという前夜ぜんやに、その電話機でんわきに紐ひもをかけて縊死いししてしまった。仕事しごとのゆきづまりで、もうどうにもならなかったのであろうが、大切たいせつな電話でんわを失うしなうことも大だい打撃だげきだったにちがいない。それだけでも不吉ふきつな電話でんわなのに、番号ばんごうが「四よん二に番ばん」で「死しに」通つうじるのだった。
