国際こくさい都市とし私わたしたちは、暫しばらくの間まリスボンに滞在たいざいすることになった。私わたしの連つれというのは、例れいの有名ゆうめいな勇猛ゆうもう密偵みっていの白木しらき豹ひょう二にのことだ。リスボンは、ポルトガルの首都しゅとだ。そのころリスボンは、欧州おうしゅうに於おける唯ただ一ひとつの国際こくさい都市としの観かんがあった。この国くには英えい米べい側がわに立たつのでもなく、日本にっぽん、ドイツ、イタリヤの枢軸すうじく国こく側がわに加くわわっているのでもなく、完全かんぜんな中立ちゅうりつ国こくであった。だから、リスボンの町まちは、いわゆる呉越同舟ごえつどうしゅうというやつで、ドイツ人じんやイタリヤ人じんが闊歩かっぽしているその向むこうから、イギリス人じんやアメリカ人じんや、それからソ連れん人じんまでが、安心あんしんし切きった顔かおで、ぶらぶらこっちへ歩あるいて来きてはすれちがうという珍ちん風景ふうけいが、至いたるところで見みられた。だから私わたしたちも、ここにいる間まは別べつに中国人ちゅうごくじんやベトナム人じんを装よそおう必要ひつようなく、わたし達たちは、日本人にっぽんじんだぞと大だいぴらに本国ほんごくの国籍こくせきを表明ひょうめいしていて一向いっこうさしつかえないのであった。

What you'll learn

The narrator and his companion Hakuboku Hyōji arrive in Lisbon and discuss their mission. Hyōji reveals they must leave for Zelcy Island that night to stop Britain.

The duo arrives on Zelcy Island and is greeted by local girls. Hyōji pretends to be Count Nibyō and the narrator Baron Rokusyō. They discuss the mysterious Marquis Mentole and his tuning fork.

Back at the lodging, Hyōji explains the real mission: to find a hidden British code key in the castle. The narrator learns the key is related to the Marquis Mentole's disappearance and a tuning fork.
