先刻せんこくから彼かれは仕事しごとが手てにつかなかった。一いち時間じかんばかり前まえに、往診おうしんから戻もどって来きた彼かれは、人力車じんりきしゃを降おりるなり、逃にげ込こむように、玄関げんかんの隣となりにある診察しんさつ室しつへ入はいると、その儘室内しつないをあちこち歩あるいて深ふかい物思ものおもいに沈しずむのであった。彼かれの胸むねはいま、立たっても居いても居おられないような遣や瀬せない気持きもちで一いっぱいであった。いつもは彼かれを慰さめてくれる庭先にわさきの花はなまでが、彼かれを嘲あざけって居いるかのように思おもわれた。眼めに見みゆるもの、耳みみに聞きくものが彼かれを苛立いらだたせた。生憎あいにく、細君さいくんが留守るすであったので、憂ゆうを別べつつべき相手あいてはなく、時々ときどき門もんの方ほうをおずおず眺ながめては、今いまにも誰だれかが、息いきせき切きって馳はせ込こんで来きはしないかと心配しんぱいするのであった。どうしてあんな失敗しっぱいをしたのだろう？　開業かいぎょうしてから初はじめての往診おうしん！　そのうれしさが、自分じぶんを有頂天うちょうてんにならしめたのであろうか？　彼かれは迎むかえの人力車じんりきしゃに乗のって、家いえを出で懸かけて行いったときの晴はれやかな感かんじを呪のろわしく思おもった。患者かんじゃは五ご歳さいになる男おとこの児こであった。
