１近頃ちかごろでの一番いちばんさむい夜よるだった。暦こよみのうちでは、まだ秋あきのなかに数かぞえられる日ひだったけれど、太陽たいようの黒点こくてんのせいでもあろうか、寒暖計かんだんけいの水銀柱すいぎんちゅうはグンと下したの方ほうへ縮ちぢんでしまい、その夜更よふけ、戸外こがいに或あるいは立たち番ばんをし、或あるいは黙々もくもくとして歩行ほこうし、或あるいは軒下のきしたに睡ねむりかけていた連中れんちゅうの誰だれも彼かれもは、公平こうへいにたてつづけの嚔くしゃみを発はっし、「ウウウン、今夜こんやは莫迦ばかに冷ひえやがる」といったような意味いみの独言ひとりごとを吐はいたのだった。猟奇りょうき趣味しゅみが高こうじて道楽どうらくに素人しろうと探偵たんていをやっているという変かわり種だねの青年せいねん理り学士がくし、帆ほ村荘そんそう六ろく君きみも、丁度ちょうどこの戸外こがい組ぐみの一いち人にんだった。彼かれは今いま、午前ごぜん三さん時半じはんにおける新宿しんじゅくのブロードウェイの入口いりぐちにさしかかったところである。大だい東京とうきょうの心臓しんぞうがここに埋うまっていると謂いわれる繁栄はんえいの新宿しんじゅく街がいも、この時間じかんには、まるで湖みずうみの底そこに沈しずんだ廃はい都とのような感かんがあった。グロテスクな装飾そうしょくをもった背せの高たかい建物たてものは、煤色すすいろの夜霧よぎりのなかに、ブルブル震ふるえながら立たち並ならんでいた。

The police arrive, and Homura presents clues including a lighter and a pistol. Suspects include the mistress Omine, the waitress Yukari, and a neon sign maker named Ippei. The police question them, and a mysterious figure is seen fleeing.
