Read a sample in Japanese東部カルパチア山地の森の中である。ある冬の寒い晩、一人の男が銃を片手に耳をすましていた。ちょっとみると、鳥か獣があらわれるのを待っているようだ。が、じつのところはそうでないのである。この男――ウルリッヒ・フォン・グラドウィツは、人間があらわれるのを待っているのだ。彼が所有する山林には、野獣がたくさんいた。でも山林のはずれのこのあたりには、そんなにいない。それにもかかわらず、このあたりが気になって仕様がないのだ。もともとこの山林は、彼の祖父が、不法な理由で所有していた小さい地主から、裁判沙汰で無理に奪いとったものである。奪われた小地主は、その裁判が不服だった。それいらい、長いあいだ、両方の地主の争いがつづいて、グラドウィツが家長になるころには、両家の個人的憎悪にまで発展していた。つまり、この両家は三代にわたって仇敵のごとく争っているのだ。
