Read a sample in Japaneseゼサップ氏の本に引用されている「悪魔の足跡」というのは、非常に不思議な現象である。英国の南西部に、デヴォン州という州がある。一八五五年二月七日の夜、その州に大雪が降った。翌朝人々はいつものとおり働きに出かけたのであるが、新しく積もった雪の表面に、不思議な足跡を発見した。それは馬蹄型の跡で、長さ四インチ、幅三インチくらいあった。不思議なことには、この足跡は、一直線にならんでいて、互いの距離は一定、どれも正確に八インチ半と決まっていた。それに普通の鳥や獣の足跡だったら、一方に雪をけっているはずなのに、この足跡は、垂直に雪を圧しつけた形になっていた。伝え聞いた人々は、大勢集まって来て、小田原評定をした。そしてこういうことの好きな連中が、跡をつけて行った。足跡は時には草むらや藪の中をくぐって、何処までもつづいていた。
