ゼサップ氏しの本ほんに引用いんようされている「悪魔あくまの足跡あしあと」というのは、非常ひじょうに不思議ふしぎな現象げんしょうである。英国えいこくの南西なんせい部ぶに、デヴォン州しゅうという州しゅうがある。一いち八はち五ご五ご年ねん二月にがつ七なな日にちの夜よる、その州しゅうに大雪おおゆきが降ふった。翌朝よくあさ人々ひとびとはいつものとおり働はたらきに出でかけたのであるが、新あたらしく積つもった雪ゆきの表面ひょうめんに、不思議ふしぎな足跡あしあとを発見はっけんした。それは馬蹄ばてい型がたの跡あとで、長ながさ四よんインチ、幅はば三さんインチくらいあった。不思議ふしぎなことには、この足跡あしあとは、一直線いっちょくせんにならんでいて、互たがいの距離きょりは一定いってい、どれも正確せいかくに八はちインチ半はんと決きまっていた。それに普通ふつうの鳥とりや獣ししの足跡あしあとだったら、一方いっぽうに雪ゆきをけっているはずなのに、この足跡あしあとは、垂直すいちょくに雪ゆきを圧おしつけた形かたちになっていた。伝つたえ聞きいた人々ひとびとは、大勢たいせい集あつまって来きて、小田原評定おだわらひょうじょうをした。そしてこういうことの好すきな連中れんちゅうが、跡あとをつけて行いった。足跡あしあとは時ときには草くさむらや藪やぶの中なかをくぐって、何処どこまでもつづいていた。
