番ばん町まちの青山あおやま主膳しゅぜんの家いえの台所だいどころでは、婢ひのお菊きくが正月しょうがつ二に日にちの昼ひるの祝いわいの済すんだ後のちの膳ぜん具ぐを始末しまつしていた。この若わかい美うつくしい婢ひは、粗相そそうして冷酷れいこくな主人しゅじん夫婦ふうふの折檻せっかんに逢あわないようにとおずおず働はたらいているのであった。その時ときお菊きくのしまつしているのは主人しゅじんが秘蔵ひぞうの南京なんきん古渡こわたりの皿さらであった。その皿さらは十じゅう枚まいあった。お菊きくはあらったその皿さらを一いち枚まい一いち枚まい大事だいじに拭ふいて傍はたの箱はこへ入いれていた。と、一いち匹ひきの大おおきな猫ねこがどこから来きたのかつうつうと入はいって来きて、前まえの膳ぜんの上うえに乗のっけてあった焼肴やきざかなの残のこり肴さかなを咥えた。吝嗇りんしょくなその家いえではそうした残のこり肴さかなをとられても口汚くちぎたなく罵ののしられるので、お菊きくは驚おどろいて猫ねこを追おいのけようとした。その機きに手てにしていた皿さらが落おちて破やぶれてしまった。お菊きくははっと思おもったがもうとりかえしがつかなかった。お菊きくは顔色かおいろを真青まっさおにして震ふるえていた。「お菊きくさん、何なにか粗相そそうしたの」そこには主膳しゅぜんの妾そばめの一いち人にんがいた。
