ある日ひ、友人ゆうじんの紹介しょうかいで人ひとが来きた。客きゃくは、わたしをつかまえてさっそく質問しつもんを発はっした。「先生せんせい、料理りょうりの根本ねもと義よしについておきかせください」そこで、わたしは言下げんかに答こたえた。「食くうために作つくることだ」客きゃくは物もの足たりぬ顔かおをしながらまたきいた。「食くうために作つくることですか、先生せんせい。そんなら、なんのために食くうのですか」「そりゃ生いきるためにだ」「なんのために生いきるのですか」「死しぬためにだ」「まるで先生せんせい、禅問答ぜんもんどうのようですね」わたしは笑わらいながらいった。「君きみがむずかしいことを聞きくからだ。料理りょうりの根本ねもと義よしについて……なんぞいい出だすからだよ。もっと、あたりまえの言葉ことばできけばいいではないか。むずかしい言葉ことばを使つかわぬと、本当ほんとうのことや、立派りっぱなことがきけないと思おもうているとみえるね」客きゃくはあわてていった。「いえ、決けっして……。では、あたりまえの言葉ことばで伺うかがったら、先生せんせいは本当ほんとうのことを教おしえてくださいますか」
